Originally known as the ICC Knockout when it was staged in 1998 in Dhaka, Bangladesh and in 2000 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The event was renamed the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002 was held every two years until 2009 (when it was held in South Africa after the scheduled event in 2008 in Pakistan had to be cancelled).
Subsequently the event moved to a four year cycle and features the top eight teams in the ICC one-day rankings.
The first round comprises two groups of four with the top two in each group progressing to the semi-finals and the winners contesting the final. The event is short, sharp and highly competitive.
In the first eight editions of the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings tournament, the number of teams varied: 9 in 1998, 11 in 2000, and 12 in 2002. In 2006, it was reduced to 10 with a qualifying round. Since 2009, only 8 teams have participated, with Pre-Quarter-finals in early editions.
The Champions Trophy was held every two years until 2006. It was moved from Pakistan to South Africa in 2009 due to security concerns and has since been held every four years.
On 13 November 2024, the ICC unveiled a refreshed visual identity for the Champions Trophy, featuring an unconventional typographic logo. The re-branding was accompanied by a brand launch video, and the new design incorporates distinctive white jackets, paying homage to the tournament’s history.
The ICC Champions Trophy, starting in 1998, has been hosted by various nations. South Africa won the first edition, with New Zealand, West Indies, Australia, India, and Pakistan claiming titles in subsequent years.
