Ravichandran Ashwin: Spinner R after the third test of Border Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement. He returned to India the next day. After this, people gave him a grand welcome at his home in Chennai. In a conversation with former England captain Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain, Ashwin made a big revelation and said, I could have captained the Indian team and I also have leadership skills. But it didn’t happen and I have no regrets.
What did Ashwin say?
On the question of captaincy R. Ashwin said, ‘This is very interesting. Because I know very well what is good for me and what is not good for others. When I started my career, I got captaincy in first-class cricket many times. During this period, I also won many tournaments for the team. I think I have the talent to become a captain. But I am not sad that I could not captain my country’s team.
If I had got the captaincy…..
Ashwin further said, ‘There are some things which I cannot control. It was difficult for some people here to understand that I was good at captaincy. But I also had to bring along 15-10 people who thought I could become captain. I feel that this chapter of my career was not for me. Some people might have thought that I am not suitable for this. But this does not mean that I was not good for captaincy. Leadership doesn’t just mean being the captain. You don’t need captaincy for this. Because there was a captain inside me who often thought about how he could make others better and that is what I did. I gave it my best and I have no regrets. Yes, even if I had got the captaincy, I would have given my best.
