Mhow (Madhya Pradesh): Shafath Ali Khan, a distinguished member of the Nawab family of Hyderabad, was bestowed with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) today.

The accolade recognizes Khan’s remarkable six-decade-long career in competitive shooting, a feat believed to be unparalleled in the history of Indian shooting sports.

The award was presented by NRAI President Kalikesh Nath Singh and Telangana Rifle Association President Amit Sanghi. A large number of NRAI officials, along with Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) CO Col C. Naren Babu, SM, Lt. Col. Laxman Singh Bisht, and other dignitaries, were present at the ceremony.

The award ceremony took place amidst the ongoing India Open Big Bore Shooting Championship, currently being held at the Infantry School in Mhow. This championship marks Khan’s return to competitive shooting after a six-year hiatus, largely due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges that led to the cancellation of Big Bore events.

Khan’s journey in the world of shooting began at the young age of 10. His innate talent was evident early on when he secured his first gold medal at the 13th National Shooting Championship in Madras (now Chennai) in 1968, at just 11 years old. Initially competing in the .22 bore standard rifle prone event, Khan has demonstrated incredible adaptability and enduring skill, now excelling in the demanding 300-meter rifle prone and three-position events.

His dedication to the sport is truly exceptional. Khan holds the unique distinction of being the senior-most active shooter in the country, having participated in shooting competitions for an astounding 57 consecutive years. His most recent medal was won at the 62nd National Shooting Championship held in Mhow in 2019, further solidifying his status as a stalwart of Indian shooting.

The NRAI’s recognition underscores Khan’s unwavering commitment, consistent performance, and significant contributions to the sport over an extraordinary period. As he competes in the India Open Big Bore Shooting Championship, his presence serves as an inspiration to fellow shooters and a testament to his enduring passion for the sport.

This championship offers yet another platform for the legendary shooter to showcase his exceptional talent and add another chapter to his already illustrious career.
