News India Live, Digital Desk: Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: As a major turn in the development of the transport infrastructure of Hyderabad, the Telangana State Government has left its previous plan to build a double-day elevated corridor under the second phase of the metro rail project. Earlier designs, which proposed to install a metro line above elevated road to maximize land use, has been replaced by more practical combination of underground and single-tier elevated routes.
The decision is different from the earlier ambitious kheke, which has been taken due to the increasing concerns of major national institutions including defense authorities and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). After the approval of the Cabinet for the Metro Phase-2 expansion in October 2024, Chief Minister A.K. Revanth Reddy called for a thorough revaluation of the proposed alignment.
High buildings create engineering and safety difficulties: Officers
The officials involved in the revised planning process cited operating and safety complications related to double-decar design. The high structures required to accommodate both road decks and metro lines could have caused engineering and safety difficulties, especially near sensitive areas. One of the main obstacles, the proposed corridor had close proximity to the Air Force Station in Hakimpet.
The defense establishment objected on security basis, due to which the planners were forced to remove the 1.5 km stake of the JBS-Shamirpet line from the underground route.
What is going to change with the latest changes in plans?
Under the updated alignment, the 86.5 km long phase-2 project will now have a mixture of elevated and subterinian tracks. The 22 -km corridor between Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) and Shamerpet, which will pass through the factory, Alwal, Hakimpet, Thumkunta and Shamerpet, will also include an underlogged section to remove defense concerns.
Meanwhile, the 24.5 km long JBS-Madachal line will remain elevated, but its height to follow AAI’s aviation safety criteria will be reduced, especially in areas near the existing metro infrastructure in JBS.
Major interchange at Jubilee Bus Station
The main objective of the new configuration is to set up a major interchange at Jubilee bus station, which will serve as an important center connecting Shamerpet and Medchal Corridor. Another major section of expansion, 40 km route from Shamshabad Airport to Future City employed, will start underground at the airport terminal. This outer will come to the surface near Ring Road near Raviryala and will continue for 18 km on greenfield alignment.
