1. Listen Actively: Kids want to be heard. Drop the distractions and give eye contact when your child is talking. This establishes trust and indicates that what they think counts.
2. Practice Open Communication: Allow your child to feel free to express themselves, whether they are happy, angry, or sad. Do not immediately correct or judge; rather, pose open-ended questions about them to better understand.
3. Get Involved in Their Education: Participate in activities at school, keep up with assignments, and discuss what they have learned. Active participation conveys that education is a joint priority.
4. Praise Efforts, Not Just Results: Rather than “You’re so brilliant,” offer “I’m impressed by how much effort you put into it.” This supports a growth mindset and resiliency.
5. Instruct Problem-Solving: Walk your child through challenging problems with the question of what they believe might be an option. This creates independence and confidence in decision-making over time.
6. Encourage Healthy Habits: Order facilitates children’s growth. Make sure they sleep well, have nutritious meals, and don’t watch too much TV. Healthy bodies help healthy brains.
7. Be a Positive Role Model: Children learn from observation. Manage stress in a calm manner, speak respectfully, and be kind in every situation. Your behaviours influence their values and reactions.
8. Encourage Their Interests: Painting, dance, programming, or sports—nurture their interests. Allow them to discover and develop in things they truly love, even if they fall outside your comfort zone.
