ED seized assets under PMLA: ED has seized rupees under the Money Laundering Prevention Act (PMLA) in the country. Property worth 1.45 lakh crore has been seized. In which in the first nine months of the current financial year, Rs. Property worth 21370 crore was seized. PMLA was implemented from 1 July 2005.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which monitors money laundering and related matters, has recently released some figures related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). According to which, property worth Rs 21,370 crore has been seized in the first nine months of FY 2024-25. The purpose of this Act is to curb serious crimes like tax evasion, black money hoarding and money laundering.
911 people arrested
Since the implementation of this law, the agency has so far arrested 911 people. So far 100 people have been convicted in 44 cases registered under the PMLA, out of which 36 were convicted in the first nine months of the current financial year. A senior official said on the condition of anonymity, “In the last five-six years, ED has been aggressively action on money laundering. It has arrested many top politicians, traders, hawala traders, cyber criminals and smugglers. ”
Seizure increased after Modi government came
According to ED data, a total of Rs 1.24 lakh crore was seized by the ED before 2024. Most of these assets i.e. about Rs. 1.19 lakh crore rupees have been seized since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power. However, the opposition, including the Congress, alleged that ‘ED has misused this law in the last few years and has targeted opposition parties’. The central government defended the agency action on the charge, saying, “It is an independent agency and its investigation is completely fair.”
Property worth 22000 crores was handed over to contenders
The ED has succeeded in handing over the seized properties in 2024 to legislators such as banks and corruption victims. He is accused in money laundering cases among the assets seized from scamsters like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Rose Valley Chit fund scam, National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL). Rs 22737 crore has been transported to the victims and the aggrieved banks. In which the total of Rs. 7404 crore rupees have been handed over to the claimants.
