Navi Mumbai: A house was gutted in fire at sector 48 in Seawood on Thursday due to an agarbatti (incense stick). Ramdas Kumthekar, a state reserve police force (SRPF) personnel who stayed at room number 14 of Gyaneshwar Mauli building of seawood, had done his morning Pooja and left the house with a burning incense stick.

“Probably due to wind from the open window or a pigeon who would have entered the flat, made the stick fall on the bed nearby causing the fire,” a Nerul fire brigade personnel said.

The incense stick was closer to the bed in his one room kitchen flat wherein he stayed on rent. “Being a former corporator of the area, I was informed immediately after the fire started and I immediately called the police, fire brigade, Mahanagar Gas and also the state electricity officials,” Bharat Jadhav, former corporator said.

The electricity was immediately cut off, the building was evacuated and the fire team doused the fire immediately with no casualties. “The fire was caused just behse of a incense stick. People should be very careful while using one and should make sure that no diya or incense stick is kept burning in a closed flat,” Jadhav added.
