A shocking incident unfolded during the FA Cup 2025 clash between Crystal Palace and Millwall, as Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts received a red card just eight minutes into the match for a reckless challenge on star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Roberts sprinted outside the penalty box to clear a long ball, but his high left-footed follow-through struck Mateta directly on the side of his face. The brutal collision left the Crystal Palace forward lying on the ground in agony, needing lengthy medical treatment.
Referee Michael Oliver initially chose not to issue any card despite being close to the incident. However, after being called over by VAR, he reviewed the challenge on the pitchside monitor and quickly showed Roberts a straight red card.
Mateta’s first reaction after getting discharged
Mateta was carried off the pitch on a stretcher with a neck brace and taken straight to the hospital. The striker required 25 stitches on his ear but was later discharged.
After the match, Mateta reassured fans with a heartfelt Instagram post:
“Thank you all for your kind messages. I’m doing well. I hope to be back very soon and stronger than ever. Well done, guys, for the great job today. I love you. JP”
