Holashtak is considered a special religious period in Hinduism, which begins exactly eight days before Holi. During this time, auspicious works like marriage, home entry, naming ceremony, starting new business are stopped. However, it is not considered inauspicious, but it is considered the best time of self-purification, meditation, charity and practice.
According to religious beliefs, the position of the planets during Holashtak is fierce, which can have a negative effect on any new work. But if during this time worship of Lord Vishnu, Hanuman Chalisa recitation, chanting mantra and charity are done, then special benefits are received.
When is Holashtak 2025 starting?
Holashtak will start 2025 from March 7 (Friday) and will run till 14 March (full moon). This period lasts from Phalgun Shukla Ashtami to Purnima. During this time auspicious works are not done, but worship, practice and charity have special significance.
What to do in Holashtak?
During Holashtak, doing some special religious work keeps positive energy in life and lowers are reduced.
1. Chant the mantra
- Chanting Vishnu Sahastranam, Hanuman Chalisa and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is considered auspicious.
- This removes negative energy and keeps happiness and peace in the house.
2. Donate
- Donate food, clothes, money, sesame, jaggery and grains to the needy.
- According to religious belief, donating in Holashtak removes the troubles of life.
3. Tribe the ancestors
- Pindadan and tarpan gives the blessings of ancestors.
- During this time, the cow gives special results by fodder, grain to birds and food to Brahmins.
4. Worship Lord Vishnu
- It is considered auspicious to worship Lord Vishnu and Narasimha avatar during Holashtak.
- If there is any problem going on in the house, then Satyanarayana Vrat Katha can be organized during this period.
What not to do in Holashtak?
According to religious beliefs, auspicious work should be avoided in eight days of Holashtak.
1. Do not do marriage and other auspicious tasks
- During this time, one should avoid starting marriage, engagement, home entry, shaving, naming rites and new business.
- It is believed that at this time the position of the planets remains turbulent, which can cause obstruction in auspicious actions.
2. Do not shop for new houses, vehicles or property
- During Holashtak, avoid shopping for new house, vehicle, land, jewelry or other expensive things.
- Doing so is the possibility of economic loss and obstacles.
3. Do not start new business
- This time is not considered favorable for the new start of shop, office or any business.
- If any new work is necessary, do it after the end of Holashtak.
Holashtak’s religious and spiritual significance
Holashtak is not just a religious tradition, but also an opportunity for mental and spiritual purification. This time is considered best for devotion, practice, meditation and service works.
- According to the legend of devotees Prahlad and Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyakashipu had tortured Prahlad during Holashtak. But in the end Lord Vishnu took Narasimha avatar and protected Prahlada.
- That is why Lord Vishnu and Narasimha avatar are specially worshiped in Holashtak.
