Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) originating from China has raised concerns in India. However, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Union Health Ministry have clarified that there is no need to panic. Despite this, the increase in cases of HMPV infection has increased vigilance and awareness among people.

This virus mainly affects the respiratory system and can cause mild to severe symptoms. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough, congestion, and difficulty breathing. Some reports also say that in severe cases it can affect other organs including the kidneys.

Can HMPV be dangerous for kidneys?

According to nephrologist Dr. B. Vijay Kiran, HMPV mainly affects the respiratory system. However, in severe cases it can also damage other organs, especially the kidneys.

  • Conclusion of the study:

A study in hospitalized children found that HMPV infection may be associated with acute kidney injury (AKI). This risk may increase with increasing age.

  • However, no clear direct link has been established between acute kidney injury and respiratory problems.

How is HMPV diagnosed?

The symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of other respiratory infections. The following tests can be done to identify it:

  1. HMPV PCR Test:
    • This molecular test is the most reliable and considered best for identifying the virus.
  2. Rapid Antigen Test:
    • Suitable for giving fast results. However, it is less sensitive than the PCR test.
  3. Bronchoscopy:
    • This is done to observe changes in the airways of the lungs.
