Mumbai: Tata Motors has achieved a historic feat by overtaking Maruti Suzuki to become the top car seller in India for the first time in 4 decades. According to a report by AutocarPro, the Indian automaker’s subcompact SUV Tata Punch has overtaken Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R and Swift. 1,91,000 units of Wagon R were sold in 2024. But Tata SUV Punch took the top spot with sales of 202,000 units. This marks a significant change in the Indian automobile market.
Out of the five best selling cars in the country, 3 are SUVs. Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga, which was the leader in 2023, has slipped to fourth place in 2024. The report said the shift in consumer preferences towards premium vehicles and SUVs, especially those priced above Rs 10 lakh, has put pressure on Maruti Suzuki Car. Maruti Suzuki’s market share in 2018 was 52 percent. Now its share has fallen to 41 percent.
