Himalayan Griffon Vulture Found Unconscious In Uran, Receives Emergency Care. |
A young Himalayan Griffon Vulture, found stranded and unconscious near a farm in Chirner village, Uran, is currently receiving critical care from the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW).
The bird, weighing approximately 7 kg, is believed to be starving from many days and dehydrated, possibly after losing its flock.
The rare sighting of the vulture left villagers startled on Thursday afternoon. “Vultures are never seen in these parts, and the sudden appearance of one in distress alarmed the locals,” said animal activist Jayant Thakur who informed the forest department.
The matter was immediately reported to a local organization and the forest department, leading to the bird’s rescue.
Upon its arrival at RAWW’s center at Mumbai , the vulture underwent a series of medical tests, including blood work, stool, and saliva sampling, along with X-rays to check for injuries. “Fortunately, there are no fractures, but the bird remains in a critical state. Initial signs suggest toxicity, possibly from consuming contaminated carcasses, but it is too early to determine the cause as further reports are awaited,” said Pawan Sharma, wildlife rescuer and RAWW president.
Since its rescue, the vulture has shown slight improvement. Initially placed on saline drips, it is now being force-fed meat to regain strength. “We are closely monitoring its condition with a dedicated team of veterinarians and handlers. The bird will remain under strict observation for at least a week before we take a call on further course of action,” added Sharma.
If the vulture stabilizes, the next phase of its rehabilitation will involve transporting it to Murbad, where RAWW has a larger transit treatment facility designed for long-term recovery and potential release back into the wild.
