Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A highly complex and life-saving surgery was successfully performed at MTH Hospital, affiliated with MGM Medical College, where doctors removed an 8-kg tumour from the abdomen of a 15-year-old girl.
The patient, Renuka, a resident of Sardarpur, had been experiencing severe abdominal pain for a long time. However, due to financial constraints, her father, Prakash Parmar, could not seek advanced medical treatment. Eventually, they reached MTH Hospital, where the medical team diagnosed the critical condition.
Dr Professor Sumitra Yadav’s unit examined the patient and found significant swelling in her abdomen. Due to the tumour’s large size, she was facing difficulty in breathing and walking. The team immediately admitted her and conducted all necessary medical tests, including an MRI scan, which revealed a massive 36x12x24 cm tumour in her ovary.
Dr Yadav stated that the tumour could have been cancerous due to abnormal cell growth and that early detection might have prevented its excessive development.
Renuka’s parents, who are farmers, were unaware of the severity of the problem. She had been experiencing mild discomfort earlier but only reported extreme pain two months ago when it became unbearable and she started facing breathing issues. The lack of medical awareness and financial resources prevented them from seeking early intervention.
Given her young age and low haemoglobin levels, the surgery was deemed highly challenging and risky. The incision had to be large, as any attempt to compress the tumour for removal could have led to its rupture, which would have been life-threatening.
Additionally, the membrane surrounding the tumour was extremely thin, making even minor pressure dangerous. However, the surgical team successfully removed it without complications.
Under the leadership of Dr Sumitra Yadav, a team of skilled doctors, played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the surgery. Additionally, Dr Vivek from the radiology department also contributed significantly to the case.
As a precautionary measure, the affected ovary was entirely removed and prayers remain for the other ovary to stay healthy. Remarkably, the patient was already smiling and breathing comfortably the very next day, demonstrating a swift recovery despite the major surgery.
Dr Sumitra Yadav emphasised the importance of early detection and urged people to get sonography done at the first sign of abdominal pain. She advised that any unusual bodily discomfort should be promptly addressed by a doctor to prevent severe health complications in the future.
Both the patient and her family expressed immense gratitude toward Dr Sumitra Yadav and the entire medical team. They described the doctor as “God-like”, as no other hospital in Sardarpur was willing to take up the case and their financial situation prevented them from seeking private treatment.
MTH Hospital’s team has once again proved its commitment to providing exceptional medical care, ensuring that even the most underprivileged patients receive life-saving treatment.
