The Bombay High Court recently ruled in a case, saying that threatening suicide and misbehaving with husband and in -laws falls under the category of cruelty, which can become the basis of divorce.

The case is of a couple who married in 2009 and also has a daughter. The husband alleges that his wife’s parents continued to interfere in their marital life. Also, when he went to her in -laws, he and his family were insulted. The husband claims that the wife went to her maternal home in 2010 without telling and threatened suicide several times. He also told the court that the wife had even tried the suicide, which increased the mental pressure on the family.

At the same time, the wife alleged that her father -in -law was addicted to alcohol and used to harass her. However, no concrete evidence in this regard was presented in the court.

Earlier, the trial court had given the verdict in favor of the husband and approved the divorce, against which the woman appealed to the High Court. The High Court, after examining all the evidence, found that the husband’s claims were supported by adequate evidence, while the allegations made by the wife could not be confirmed.

Justice Joshi said in his judgment that “This type of behavior by the partner is equal to mental cruelty, which can be a valid basis of divorce.” The court approved divorce on this basis.
