Mumbaikars need to brace for two more days of heatwave as the maximum temperature is likely to remain around 38 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) declared the heatwave from Sunday, March 9 to Monday, March 11, the city’s second heatwave in 12 days. Mumbai witnessed the last heatwave on February 25 and 26, when the mercury had crossed 38 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature for the ongoing heatwave is expected to remain around 38 degrees Celsius. The mercury is likely to drop from March 12; however, the hot and humid weather conditions will continue. The IMD’s summer 2025 outlook has already predicted heatwaves for the month of March and above-normal temperatures for the season overall.
IMD’s weather forecast issued on March 9 for the Konkan region- which includes Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri- says, “There will be a gradual rise in maximum temperature by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius during the next 2-3 days and a gradual fall thereafter. The maximum temperature very likely to prevail between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius over parts of Konkan over the next 2 to 3 days.”
IMD Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble said, “Mumbai is receiving both easterly and northerly winds because of which afternoons and evenings temperatures are high. The maximum and minimum temperatures for till March 11 are expected to be around 38 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively. Kamble added that citizens are advised to take health precautions considering the hot and humid weather conditions, which includes staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to heat.
As per IMD’s weather report of March 9, the mercury across Maharashtra was above normal. The maximum temperature in North Konkan was 34 to 37 degrees Celsius, which was appreciably above normal. While the maximum temperature in South Konkan was 32 to 34 degrees Celsius, North Madhya Maharashtra was 36 to 38 degrees Celsius, South Madhya Maharashtra was 33 to 39 degrees Celsius and Marathwada was 36 to 38 degrees Celsius- all regions with above normal temperature.
