Mumbai: Due to excessive expenditure on various construction projects by the Maharashtra Public Health Department, the financial burden has increased so much that new schemes are being disrupted to maintain people’s health.

Public Health Department is irregularly approving projects including primary health centers, laboratories and hospitals. It has become difficult to provide quality medical facilities to the people by approving the projects without estimating the actual economic situation and how much it will actually cost on construction.

The Public Health Department still has to pay nine thousand crore rupees to the construction contractors. An official said that it would be difficult to provide new health facilities due to the ever -increasing financial burden.

Allegations of threatening builder: Chhota Rajan free from allegations, questions raised on CBI investigation

Every year the Public Health Department gets Rs 500 crore under the core budget. Most of this amount is spent in purchasing new ambulances or creating health centers. At present, the Health Department has to pay nine thousand crore rupees. Out of this, Rs 7,500 crore is expected to be paid from the state treasury. While the remaining amount will be paid under the National Health Mission. Thus, the money spent on infrastructure is making people difficult to provide health services.

The health department also lacks adequate manpower. The state government was also criticized for not recruiting sufficient number of health workers in the report of CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General). 42 percent of the approved posts of doctors, nurses and paramedics are vacant. In this context, the Health Officer questioned what is the use of building a hospital building, when there is no staff to run them.
