Raipur/Bastar: Head Constable Birendra Kumar Sori of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was given a Guard of Honour at the police lines in Narayanpur for his exemplary valour he showed in an encounter which occurred in the Abujhmad region, known as a safe haven for Maoists, while fighting against the armed Naxals.

During the ceremony, IG Bastar Sundaraj P, along with other senior officials of the Bastar Police, were present and paid homage to the Martyred jawan.

The last rites of the martyred Head Constable Sori were performed in his native village, Bhrimapani Narharpur, in the Kanker district. Sori is survived by his wife, Sheetal Shorey, and three daughters—Nikita, Aradhana, and Jharna.

The Maoists tried to trap the security forces in the ambush they laid. Maoists looted the arms and ammunition carried out by the jawan, sources informed.

According to Bastar Police, the 36-year-old Sori attained martyrdom during an anti-Naxal operation on Wednesday afternoon. He was part of a joint team of DRG and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel when they encountered Maoists in the forests of Sonpur and Kokhametta, about 30 km from Narayanpur police headquarters.

The encounter took place at around 1 p.m., during which Sori suffered bullet injuries and succumbed to his wounds on the spot. Sori had joined the Narayanpur Police in 2010 and was promoted to Head Constable in 2018 for his extraordinary performance in anti-Naxal operations.
