Chandigarh: Haryana police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a travel agent in Ambala for breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and human trafficking in connection with the recent deportation of a local youth by the US government, who was one of the 104 Indian illegal immigrants recently deported by the US government.

Police said that Gurjant Singh was arrested after Jitesh’s father Sushil Walia, a retired police official, lodged a complaint that accused along with his associates Jasvinder Singh, Amrik Singh, Prashant and Chacha charged Rs 40 lakh promising to secure an overseas settlement for his son but sent Jitesh illegally. Police said the accused Gurjant Singh was presented before court which sent him to five-day police remand.

The complainant said that Jitesh was first taken to Delhi and kept in a hotel there for a week in May last year and then sent to Dubai where he was kept for next about 25 days before sending him to Kazakhstan where he stayed for 15 days before sending him to Ethiopia where he stayed for 14 days. Stating that his son was taken to Dubai and Netherlands before taking him to Suriname.

According to the complainant, from Suriname, his son was taken in a car, bus and boats and even on foot for about four months after which he was sent to America on January 18, 2025, through the Mexico border where he was caught and deported to India.

Stating that Gurjant’s arrest is likely to lead to arrest of his accomplices, police said that one more FIR has been registered in Ambala district’s Naraingarh town on the complaint by Shubham Saini, who was also among the 104 deportees, who claimed that a travel agent had also charged Rs 42 lakh and duped him in a similar manner.

Meanwhile, local police said that in all, four youths belonging to Ambala were among the deportees of which two have so far lodged their complaints.
