Another crucial interchange arm of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), connecting  Haji Ali Juice Centre to Marine Drive, was opened for traffic on Wednesday morning. This marks a significant step in the completion of the ambitious coastal road project. The final arm, which will connect the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to Lotus Jetty -Worli Naka, is expected to be operational by the third week of March.

The 10.58-km coastal road stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the BWSL. The project features multi-level interchanges at key locations, including Haji Ali, Peddar Road (Amarsons Garden), and Worli Sea Face. While the Peddar Road interchange has four entry-exit arms, the Haji Ali interchange has eight, and the Worli interchange has five. Before the opening of the new Haji Ali interchange arm, south-bound vehicles accessed the coastal road through either the Worli interchange, the Amarson’s interchange, or directly via the BWSL.

“The final arm remains to be opened at the Worli interchange, which will provide direct connectivity from Worli to the BWSL for northbound vehicles. The work is in its final stage, and we expect to complete it by next month. This final link will complete a key segment of the MCRP and is set to be open to traffic by the third week of March,” said a senior civic official. The official further explained that the construction of vehicular parking spaces for the traffic arms had delayed the opening process. “We had to construct parking spaces, which is why the opening of these arms took some time,” the official added. Earlier, the vehicular arms at the Haji Ali interchange were opened in December 2024.

The northbound carriage of the bow-string bridge, which connects the Coastal Road to the BWSL was opened for vehicular traffic on January 27, 2025. This new route has been a major boon for motorists, slashing travel time between Bandra and Marine Drive to just 10-12 minutes and offering a much-needed, faster alternative for thousands of daily commuters. The Coastal Road project commenced in October 2018 with a total cost of Rs. 13,983 crore. The road has reduced travel time by 70% and fuel consumption by 34%, claims BMC.
