Gandhinagar News: Gujarat is known for its diverse and excellent handicrafts. In the last few years, the state of Gujarat has received a total of 26 GI tags, out of which 22 GI tags have been received for the handicrafts sector. Now the Government of India has given GI tag to Gharchola, another cultural heritage craft of Gujarat.
With this, the total number of GI tags received by Gujarat has increased to 27, while the handicrafts sector has received this 23rd GI tag. This is another success of Garvi Gurjari under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel.
The pride of Gujarat “Gharchola Handicrafts” has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Handloom Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India during the “GI and Beyond – From Heritage to Development” program recently held in New Delhi. . Garvi has become possible due to the efforts of Gurjari.
The GI recognition of Gharchola reflects Gujarat’s dedication to preserving its artistic heritage. This GI tag defines the rich heritage and intricate craftsmanship of Gharchola handicrafts of Gujarat and will strengthen the unique cultural treasure of Gharchola art on the global platform.
The One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, launched under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has given a massive boost to GI products. Taking forward this vision of the Chief Minister, commendable work is being done by the Cottage and Village Industries Commissioner’s office to obtain these GI tags.
Gharcholas of Gujarat are worn on formal occasions like weddings in Hindu and Jain society. Traditionally, Gharchola were made in colors like red or maroon and green or yellow, which are considered auspicious colors in Hindu tradition. Today, the weavers of Gujarat are updating their designs and techniques in making Gharchola sarees in modern times. They are developing skills in making more attractive sarees, due to which the demand for home-made sarees has also improved significantly in the market. Gharchola sarees are being sold in abundance at the Garvi Gurjari sales centers of the corporation.
