The Powai police have booked a security guard after he allegedly threw a three-month-old stray puppy from a height of about one floor, leaving it injured and maimed.

The guard, identified as Kailash Gupta, 56, was later sacked by the housing society following the incident, which took place on May 16 at Tower Park, Emerald Isle, Sakivihar Road.

Kashish Dhanjani, 40, a resident and dog lover, lodged a complaint the same day after hearing a loud noise near Tower 6 and spotting the injured puppy crying in pain. Another society member, Neha Sharma, informed him that the animal had been thrown from the tennis court garden and took the puppy to a veterinary clinic in Andheri East, where it was treated by Dr Fernaz Mulla.

Following inquiries by society members, Gupta was identified as the accused. Dhanjani subsequently filed a complaint and a case was registered under Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (which covers various acts of cruelty to animals and prescribes penalties), and Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (mischief by killing or maiming an animal).
