Millions of passengers traveling on the National Highway and Expressway are likely to get relief from the central government soon. The Ministry of Road Transport is considering two new proposals, which can provide relief to passengers. The first proposal is that toll tax will not be charged on two and a half lanes and narrow National Highways. The second proposal is to provide a unlimited travel pass of Rs 3000 for a year for cars.
Approval of proposals
According to sources, the Ministry of Road Transport has approved both proposals. These proposals have now been sent to the Finance Ministry, as the government may face a decrease in toll earnings due to their implementation. However, it is expected that the government will not suffer much due to toll-freeing the narrow National Highway.
Union Minister announcement
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier talked about the plan to give an annual and lifetime pass option for private vehicles. He has made a statement several times that the government is considering giving relief to passengers traveling through the National Highway and Expressway. Nitin Gadkari also said that if the toll is cut, the government will not have any complaints on this.
New review on toll tax
According to Times of India sources, during the review meeting, Nitin Gadkari had proposed to toll-free two and a half lanes or paved roads and asked the authorities to consider it. The toll fees on these roads are 64% less than the National Highway with four lanes or more. There are less than 50 such toll plazas across the country, most of which are publicly financed roads, where the toll is charged by government agencies.
Compensation
The amount received from the toll recovered on these roads is less than the amount spent, so toll-freeing these roads cannot be very harmful for the government. However, tolls are charged from the four lanes and higher lanes national highways and expressways, which are high. Private agencies do toll collection work on these roads, and if the government issues an annual pass for private vehicles, then the government will have to bear the loss.
Government figures
According to government data, during 2024-25, the government has earned a total of Rs 61000 crore from the toll, with private vehicles about 20-21%. The remaining 79-80% has earned the government from commercial and heavy vehicles.
This change can provide relief to the passengers, and at the same time the government will also get a chance to improve the toll system with this new policy.
