GPS based toll collection will be implemented soon, new system will replace Fastag: Know what will change and how will benefit

The central government is going to implement GPS based toll system soon to make the toll collection system more smart and faster in India. This new system will replace Fastag, which will not only save time, but passengers will have to give the same distance toll as they have fixed on the highway or expressway.

Fastag vs GPS toll collection system – What is the difference?

Speciality Fastag GPS toll system
Technology Rfid sticker scanning Satellite-based location tracking
How does it work? Toll plaza has a sticker scan The vehicle has a real-time location track
Toll cut According to fixed fee On the end distance
Payment From fastag wallet GPS-Linked Digital Wallet

How will people benefit?

  • Paying the same amount, the distance you will cover on the highway
  • Get rid of long queues, because you will not have to stop at the toll plaza
  • Low toll tax on limited journey, ie saving money
  • Without interruption journey, which will save both time and fuel

Where is testing going on?

The government has currently started the GPS toll collection system in these three cities as a pilot project:

  • Mysore
  • Bengaluru
  • Panipat

If the test is successful, it will be implemented across the country.

How will the new system work?

  • The car will install on-Board Unit (OBU) or GPS tracking device
  • This device will record your trip distance
  • The toll will be decided on the basis of per kilometer
  • OBU will be linked to digital wallet, which will automatic cut

How to deduct money?

  • Obu will track the location of your vehicle
  • As soon as you travel on a toll route, the amount from your digital wallet will automatically deduct as the distance is covered.

Government’s plan and deadline

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has recently informed that this system will be implemented across the country soon. It is expected that by the end of 2025, the GPS toll collection system will be used across India instead of Fastag.
