Mumbai: A scam has surfaced in which fortified rice worth Rs 18 lakh to be distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS) was repeatedly exported abroad. Two trucks carrying this rice have been stopped in Panvel and an amount of Rs 25 lakh has been seized from them. 18 lakh rupees have been seized. The driver of one truck has been arrested while the other driver escaped.

Based on the information, a team of Supply Department stopped and investigated two suspicious trucks carrying Ocean Gate CFS (container freight station) for export to Public Distribution System (PDS) rice.

During the investigation, a truck driver managed to escape from the scene. 319.75 quintals of nutritious rice were found filled in both trucks. Which is distributed only through PDS. The total estimated price of seized rice is Rs 15 lakh. Its price is said to be 18 lakhs.

Further investigation revealed that this rice was obtained from an industry in Khalapur and was being transported for illegal exports. The seized rice also includes fortified rice. Rice rich in nutrients is distributed only to ration card holders under government welfare schemes.

On the basis of all these investigations, the Panvel Police registered a case against the owner of Khalapur Industries and both truck drivers in this case and a driver was taken into custody. The second absconding driver was searched and the case was further investigated.
