The old wall of the famous Hata (Housing Complex) of former cabinet minister and Bahubali leader Pandit Harishankar Tiwari is being demolished for the construction of heritage corridor in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. However, it is not yet clear that this action is being taken under illegal removal or compensation will be given by the Public Works Department (PWD). In this case both PWD officials and people of Hata are avoiding speaking something clearly.
Harishankar Tiwari’s family is known for his political and social grip in Purvanchal. Even after his death, the family’s political influence remains intact. Recently his son and former MLA Vinay Shankar Tiwari was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the bank fraud case, while Bhishma Shankar Tiwari is keeping distance from the case.
People from Dharamshala market to Sumer Sagar are removing their own constructions. At the same time, a new wall is being rapidly erected near the old wall in the Hata complex. A new wall is built about one to three feet from the old wall. The new wall will be ready in about three-four days, after which the old wall will be completely removed.
Construction of Aggarwal Bhavan and vegetable market is also affected
About 7-8 feet of the building of Agrawal Bhawan, built in 1940 located in Aryanagar for heritage corridor, is also being broken. This building was constructed with local cooperation and charity. There is also doubt about this among traders. Two meters of the dilapidated building of the vegetable market at Arya Nagar intersection is to be removed, but the situation is not clear here too.
Registry process slowed down due to court directive
The PWD had planned to register more than 850 properties for the heritage corridor, but the process has slowed down after the High Court’s instructions. The court has clarified that land cannot be occupied without acquisition. So far only about 375 properties have been registered. Trade Board President Nitin Jaiswal has said that the traders are not against the corridor, but they are demanding proper compensation.
