EPFO Update: Good news has emerged for Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) employees. EPFO has introduced facility of face authentication technology to create and activate universal account number (UAN). Now employees can create their own UAN number using Aadhaar face certification technology using the Umang app.
Not only this, members who already have a UAN number, but have not yet activated it, can now easily activate their UAN through Umang app. Let us tell you that in FY 2024-25, 1,26,56,127 UAN was generated, but only 44,68,236 i.e. about 35 percent could be activated.
These problems used to happen earlier also.
Till now, the employer used to send data to EPFO to EPFO to generate the UAN number and verified on the basis of data. However, despite the base details being valid, there were errors in things like father’s name, mobile number or date of birth, due to which employees had to update data for claims or other benefits later.
Similarly, in many cases, the EPFO could not contact the employee due to the wrong mobile number or not being given any information. In addition, activating the UAN through the Aadhaar OTP verification on the EPFO member portal was a separate process, which was completed by the member, although the EPFO has now made it very easy with great enthusiasm.

– Open Umang app and go to UAN allocation and activation under UAN service through facial certification.
– Note the mobile number related to Aadhaar number and Aadhaar
– To agree, tick on checkbox and verify the obtained OTP.
– The camera will be able to capture live photo image – When the color framework of the image turns from red to green, it means that the image capture is successful.
– After matching the image in the Aadhaar database, the UAN will be ready and will be sent to mobile via SMS.
– After creating UAN, the UAN card can be downloaded from the employee Umang app or member portal.
