Enraged, he accused Rishi Kapil of the theft of horse, which enraged the sage to consume everyone.

When King Sagar came to know about this incident, he sent his grandson Anshuman to bring the horse and find a solution to the fathers. Anshuman brought back the horse, but the attempt to bring Ganga to earth for the liberation of his fathers was unsuccessful.

Many generations of Anshuman failed to please the mother Ganga. Finally, King Bhagiratha did harsh penance to bring Ganga to earth, which pleased Maa Ganga agreed to come to the earth. But to handle the sharp velocity of Ganga, Lord Shiva had to wear mother Ganga in his jatas. After this Bhagiratha again worshiped Lord Shiva, then Shiva slowly left Ganga on earth.

While landing on the earth, the rapid flow of the mother Ganga took away the yagyashala of the sage Jahnu. Enraged, Jahnu Rishi contained Ganga within him. Bhagiratha praised and begs Rishi Jahnu, pleasing he rejoined the Ganges with his ear. After this Bhagiratha saved his ancestors from the water of Maa Ganga, and the bones of the sons of King Sagara attained salvation as soon as they touched the Ganges water.
