FTC’s antitrust trial against META starts, Mark Zuckerberg’s difficulties may increase

Social media giant META (in the past Facebook) is once again caught in legal trouble. The company has been accused of establishing a monopoly by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for the purchase of Instagram (2012) and WhatsApp (2014). For this, FTC filed an antittest case, whose trial has started on Monday, 14 April.

What is the matter?

FTC alleges that Meta bought Instagram and Whatsapp to eliminate competition and maintain its domination in the social media market.

  • The case was filed during the tenure of former President Donald Trump.
  • But in the Biden government, it was carried forward further.
  • Now FTC president is hearing the trial led by Andrew Ferguson.

How long will the trial run?

  • FTC and META lawyers have introduced their opening statements in front of US District Judge James Boasberg.
  • The trial is expected to run for 7 to 8 weeks.
  • Many evidence and statements of witnesses will be recorded during the trial.

These prominent personalities can be called to court

According to the NPR report, these prominent people can be called to testify in the trial:

  • Mark Zuckerberg (CEO, META)
  • Sheryl Sandberg (East COO, META)
  • Adam Moseri (Head, Instagram)

Did Zuckerberg ask for help from Trump?

A report by The Wall Street Journal claimed that Mark Zuckerberg personally requested former US President Donald Trump to ask FTC to withdraw the case. However, META has rejected the claim.

Meta rescue

META spokesman Christopher Sagro issued a statement last week and said:

  • “This suit of FTC is against reality.”
  • He said that Meta is working in a tough competitive market, where Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp
    • Tiktok,
    • YouTube,
    • X (East Twitter),
    • IMESSAGE,
    • And many other platforms have to be combated.
  • He also said that the evidence to be presented in the trial will show that Meta does not have a monopoly in the market.
  • Robot boxing event: Now robots will also land in the boxing ground, color will be colorful! The first university program will be live soon
