The Indo-Bangladesh rail service, which was closed due to violence and political instability in Bangladesh, has restored after 9 months. On Thursday night at 10:30 pm, a freight train from India reached Birol railway station in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Railway has confirmed this.

How did the service start?

  • This goods train left from Radhikapur station in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal.
  • The train reached Bangladesh via Birol border and will return to India by this route after removing the goods.
  • Passengers and freight train services were stopped due to violence erupted in Bangladesh in July last year.

Passenger rail service still stalled

The Maitri Express, Bandhan Express and Mithali Express running between India and Bangladesh are still closed.

  • The Maitri Express (Dhaka-Kolkata) was closed due to violence.
  • Bandhan Express (Kholna-Kolkata) used to run two days a week, but service has not been restored till now.
  • Mithali Express (Dhaka-Jalpiguri) is also postponed until next notice.

Bangladesh background of disturbance

  • The student movement began against the Sheikh Hasina government, which turned into a political rebellion.
  • Hasina had to resign due to increasing protest, after which India gave her asylum.
  • This was followed by a coup in Bangladesh and Mohammad Yunus was appointed as the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government.
  • Under the new government, attacks on minorities and temples increased, causing the situation to worse.

Still not completely normal

Although the goods train service has started, there has been no official announcement about the resumption of passenger rail services. Security conditions in Bangladesh are not completely normal, so the passengers will still have to wait.
