A free legal aid cell has been formed specially for the residents of Navi Mumbai.
Quran The Truth (QTT) foundation, a charitable trust run in Nerul involved in social activities such as providing educational help, medical assistance, feeding the poor and organizing blood donation camps has launched its free legal aid cell.
A 60 year old Nerul resident had received a letter from Bihar stating that he is one of the accused in a criminal matter and is required to be present before the local police.
A 30 year old man from Seawoods is unable to understand how to convince his wife who has left him for many years to return or to file for divorce.
These and many such tricky cases are provided with free legal advice at the foundation. “The elderly were asked to be cautious as the matter was most likely to be a fraud. whereas in case of the divorce matter the man was counselled on the appropriate measures to be taken,” said the advocate.
The cell functions once a week wherein senior advocates provide free legal services. “The cell is intended to provide preliminary guidance from a legal point of view. Guidance is given in all forms of matter; it could be a civil issue or family laws related. Those approaching are given appropriate guidance in the matter,” said a member from the trust.
The cell was launched in the month of December and since has catered to numerous residents seeking for legal advice. “ The idea behind launching this free legal aid was to help the needy and socially and economically backwards sections of the society. The people seeking guidance are usually those who have little knowledge about the way legal machinery functions,” said an office bearer.
The cell functions from 10 to 12 pm at Ganga Jamuna apartment sector 15 Nerul. The services offered are also to assist individuals in settling their dispute by mediation or conciliation. Spreading legal awareness through legal literacy programs, seminars and workshops is stated to be its other goal. “ With the change in laws it is important that citizens are made aware about the sections and their applications. The cell will be calling in experts to share their thoughts and viewpoints,” said the officer bearer.
