In a significant verdict, the Mumbai Sessions Court has sentenced four robbers to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a gold heist targeting a trader.

On September 17, 2024, complainant Mukesh Kumar Ratanchand Sanghvi (46), a gold and silver trader, was traveling with his employees and nephew in a taxi (MH-03 AT 4226) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. He was carrying 6,569.50 grams of gold jewelry worth approximately ₹1,87,60,000 for transport to Rajasthan.

As the taxi stopped near the Sulabh toilet at Carnac Bunder Bridge, the driver pretended to take a break, at which point the accused forcefully dragged Sanghvi out of the vehicle, assaulted him, and snatched his gold chain. Meanwhile, the accomplices kidnapped his employees and nephew, escaping with the gold-laden bag in the taxi. They later abandoned the hostages on P. D’Mello Road before fleeing with the vehicle.

Following an investigation, the Pydhonie Police registered an FIR in 2016 under sections 395 (dacoity) and 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC. Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch Unit 2 tracked down the culprits, identifying a person who had leaked information about the gold transportation. Based on this intel, four accused—Prafull Ramchandra Gaikwad, Shahanwaz Bahuddin Khan, Jahangir Abdul Malik Shaikh, and Ratankumar Shyamnath Singh—were arrested from Rajasthan. The police recovered 6,273 grams of stolen gold jewelry worth ₹1,75,38,127 from them.

A total of 34 witnesses were examined during the trial. Additional Sessions Judge V. M. Sundale of the City Sessions Court, Mumbai, found the accused guilty and sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
