Udaipur: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Girija Vyas sustained burn injuries while performing puja at her residence in Udaipur on Monday, March 31. The incident took place during the Gangaur festival, when her dupatta caught fire from a lamp. Vyas was immediately rushed to a private hospital in the city for first aid before getting transferred to a hospital in Ahmedabad for further treatment.
According to a report by ETV Bharat, her brother Gopal Krishna Verma revealed that Vyas was performing her usual prayers at the home temple when the accident happened. “Her condition is stated to be stable now,” he told the publication.”
As per the report, Vyas’ household worker, Banshi heard her distress call first and immediately rushed to help her. “I went out to offer water to the sun god. When I returned, I saw her clothes had caught fire. I tried to extinguish the flames with water and a towel,” he told ETV Barat.
Vyas’ family member Hitanshi Sharma added that the entire family had gathered for the Gangaur puja, and after its completion, they returned to their rooms, while Vyas continued her ritual when the fire caught her clothing.
Following the news of her accident, opposition leader Tika Ram Jully took to X (formerly Twitter) to pray for her recovery, while Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra also shared his well-wishes on social media.

Vyas has been a significant figure in Indian politics. She has previously served as the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee and National President of the Women’s Commission. She was also the Chief Whip of the Congress in the Lok Sabha and has been an influential member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
