Taking a major decision on Monday, April 7, the government has increased excise duty of Rs 2 per liter on petrol and diesel. This news created a stir in the market, especially when there was already a huge decline in the stock market. However, it is a matter of relief for the common consumers that this increase will not affect the retail price i.e. retail rates.
What is the decision of the government
Excise duty in India is a tax levied by a central government which is imposed on petrol and diesel. The Revenue Department of the Finance Ministry has issued an official notification in this regard, according to which:
- Excise duty on petrol has now increased to Rs 13 per liter.
- It has increased to Rs 10 per liter on diesel.
- These new rates will be applicable from Tuesday, 8 April 2025.
The government has made it clear that oil companies will bear this extra burden themselves and no effect will be affected on consumers.
Ministry of Petroleum gave information
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed through tweet that oil marketing companies have been instructed not to make any changes in retail prices. That is, consumers will not get any increase in the prices of petrol and diesel at the moment.
