World Intellectual Property Day is observed every year on April 26. This significant day is observed to learn about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. The day recognises the huge potential of young people to find new and better solutions that support the transition to a sustainable future.

What is Intellectual property?

Intellectual property refers to the creations of the mind, such as artistic works, designs, symbols used in commerce, and literature. This term describes the rights associated with these creations, allowing creators and innovators to protect their work and earn profits from it. These rights are safeguarded by laws, patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Intellectual property rights are categorised into two main areas: copyright and industrial property. Around the world, young people are rising to innovation challenges, using their energy, ingenuity, curiosity, and creativity to shape a better future. These innovative and creative minds are driving the changes necessary for a more sustainable future.

Origin of World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact daily life.” April 26 was chosen as the day to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day as it coincides with the date when the convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organisation came into effect in 1970.

Every year, the World Intellectual Property Organisation is observed and it is associated with a particular message. It is an opportunity for young people to find out how IP rights can support their goals, help transform their ideas into reality, generate income, create jobs and make a positive impact on the world around them.
