History of Maharashtra Day
The state of Maharashtra was formed on May 1, 1960, following the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960, which divided the larger Bombay State. Prior to this division, Maharashtra was part of the Bombay State, which included the present-day states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, as well as parts of Madhya Pradesh. The residents of this region spoke various languages, including Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani.
Recognising the linguistic and cultural diversity among these regions, the States Reorganisation Commission recommended that states be established based on language. As a result, Maharashtra was created as an independent state, with Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) designated as its capital.
