Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Capital city’s sole women’s park Firdosh Park in Kilol area of Kamla Nagar, is grappling with encroachment and improper parking issues, creating significant discomfort for female visitors. The park’s entrance has been obstructed by unauthorised kiosks, tea stalls and vehicle parking, hindering access and tarnishing the purpose of the space.

Around five kiosks and tea stalls have set up operations near the main gate, while some permanent shops have encroached on nearby spaces. Additionally, commuters have turned the area into an impromptu parking zone, with more than 50 two-wheelers regularly parked in front of the entrance, effectively blocking it.

Ishwar Singh, a security guard at the park, told Free Press that although the park strictly prohibits male entry, some miscreants attempt to sneak in. ‘People gather at these tea stalls and park their vehicles in front of the gate, blocking the entrance. This forces many female visitors to leave without entering,’ Singh said.

Despite his repeated requests to commuters to avoid parking there, the issue persists. Singh further said that BMC officials and police used to patrol near the park. Local visitors are hopeful that swift action will restore the park’s intended purpose as a safe and peaceful space for women.

Visitor vents frustration

A female visitor shared her frustration, stating, ‘It is very uncomfortable to visit the park because men park their vehicles at the entrance, sit on their bikes and stare at every woman passing by. It’s unsettling and makes us avoid the park altogether.’

Mayor assures action

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Malti Rai has acknowledged the problem and assured action. ‘I will personally visit the park and its surrounding areas soon. Strict measures will be taken to address the encroachment issue,’ she said.
