Amidst the grandeur of the Maha Kumbh 2025, where millions of devotees converge for spiritual awakening, a unique initiative is quietly transforming lives. The Uttar Pradesh government has established five “Vidya Kumbh” primary schools within the vast Mahakumbh mela grounds to provide free, high-quality education to the children of 15,000 sanitation workers tirelessly maintaining cleanliness during the event.
This ambitious project, led by the state’s basic education department, ensures that children from marginalized families do not miss out on their education while their parents work to make the event a success. Located in sectors 1, 2, 7, 10, and 13, these schools are equipped with digital classrooms, playgrounds, and essential amenities, creating a vibrant and inclusive learning environment.
Transformative vision
Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh praised the initiative as a testament to the government’s commitment to education and social upliftment. “On the auspicious occasion of Maha Kumbh-2025, the Uttar Pradesh government is paving the way for a brighter future for the next generation. Vidya Kumbh reflects our dedication to ensuring that every child has access to quality education,” Singh said.
Over 500 students aged 6 to 14 have already enrolled in these schools, with a target of reaching 1,000 children during the Kumbh. Under the ‘Umang Kit’ scheme, students receive free school uniforms, sweaters, books, stationery, and shoes, removing barriers to learning and fostering a sense of inclusion.
Director General of School Education Kanchan Verma explained the broader impact: “Through Vidya Kumbh, we are ensuring that children from labor families continue their education even amidst this massive event. It is a step towards bridging educational gaps and empowering marginalized communities.”
Voices from the ground
For many parents, Vidya Kumbh has been a lifeline. Sunita, a sanitation worker from Varanasi, shared her gratitude: “I was worried that my daughter Rajkumari would fall behind in her studies while I worked here. Now, she’s not only learning but also thriving with her new friends and teachers.”
Eight-year-old Arjun, a student at the Vidya Kumbh Primary School in Sector-10, beamed as he spoke about his experience. “I love studying here! The big playground is so much fun, and the teachers make learning exciting. We also get delicious food every day,” he said.
Meena, a 10-year-old student, expressed her happiness: “We got new books, sweaters, and shoes. I look forward to coming to school every day because it feels like a happy place where I can learn and play.”
Holistic learning
The Vidya Kumbh schools emphasize modern and engaging teaching methods. Digital and game-based learning tools, including audio-visual aids and interactive whiteboards, are used to make lessons enjoyable and accessible. Nursery students experience playful and activity-based learning to foster their interest in education.
Akanksha Rana, Officer on Special Duty for the Kumbh Mela Authority, highlighted the ambitious plans: “ This initiative is not just about education; it is about nurturing a sense of community and care.”
Students also receive nutritious mid-day meals served in dedicated dining areas, ensuring their physical well-being. The holistic approach reflects the government’s commitment to balancing education with health and overall development.
Beacon of hope
Maha Kumbh 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering, is expected to attract over 40 crore devotees over 45 days. The Vidya Kumbh initiative, seamlessly integrated into this grand event, exemplifies the blending of cultural heritage with social welfare.
The initiative has drawn admiration from various quarters. “This is a wonderful example of how education can be prioritized even during large-scale events. It is inspiring to see the government taking such proactive steps,” said Ramesh Yadav, a resident of Prayagraj.
Local businesses near the mela grounds are also benefiting from the initiative, as the influx of workers and their families has boosted demand for food, supplies, and services. “The Vidya Kumbh schools are not just helping children; they are uplifting the entire community,” said Mohan Gupta, a shopkeeper near Sector-10.
Empowering Gen Next
For the children attending Vidya Kumbh, this initiative represents more than just education—it is an opportunity to dream big. “I love my new school,” said Rajkumari, Sunita’s daughter. “I am learning so many new things, and the teachers make us feel special. I feel like I’m part of something important.”
As the Maha Kumbh continues to draw millions of devotees, the Vidya Kumbh initiative shines as a symbol of hope, empowerment, and progress. By prioritizing education amidst one of the world’s most significant cultural and spiritual events, Uttar Pradesh has set a precedent for inclusive development that will leave a lasting legacy.
