The social media war between billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is heating up with Musk calling the latter a ‘liar’ on Thursday (January 21). The latest post from Musk on social media platform X, which he himself owns, came a day after he took a dig at OpenAI’s USD 500 billion Stargate project which is aiming to radically enhance AI infrastructure in the US.

Reposting a post containing a Reuters news published last year, Musk hinted that Altman had previously said he didn’t get compensation at OpenAI. But the screenshot attached in the post showing Reuters news had a headline ‘Exclusive: OpenAI to remove non-profit control and give Sam Altman equity’

‘…What a liar!’ read Musk’s post.

On Wednesday, the two men crossed swords over the Stargate project, the announcement about which was made by none-other-than US President Donald Trump, who is close to Musk.

Stargate project is being developed by OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank.

Musk took a dig at the project right on the announcement post OpenAI made on X.

‘They don’t actually have the money,’ wrote Musk claiming that he knows SoftBank has less than USD 10 billion secured.

Sam Altman replied to Musk saying the claim was wrong. While initially saying he respected Musk, what followed was almost a direct hit at him.

Elon Musk is one of the co-founders of OpenAI but left the company in 2018. OpenAI suddenly became one of the major tech players in the world after it launched ChatGPT in November 2022. ChatGPT the first publicly available generative AI tool, influenced the tech race profoundly with other companies rushing to jump on the bandwagon.
