Delhi electricity bill hike: The Delhi government has given a big blow to electricity consumers. When the heat is at its peak in the months of May and June, the electricity bills of Delhiites also increase. Electricity bills are going to increase by 7 to 10 percent in May and June 2025. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has allowed power companies to increase electricity bills, this decision will directly affect the pockets of consumers.

The Delhi government has given a big blow to Delhiites by increasing the electricity bill. The reason behind this is being said to be amendment in the power purchase adjustment cost (PPAC). Electricity generation companies charge this fee from customers to compensate for the rising cost of coal, gas or other fuels.

Electricity companies say that the prices of coal and gas have increased globally, causing power generation to become expensive. As the heat increases in the months of May and June, the demand for electricity also increases, forcing discom to buy electricity at expensive rates. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has given permission to recover the October-December 2024 power purchase adjustment charge (PPAC) in May-June 2025. This will increase the electricity bill of consumers by 7 to 10 percent.

How much will the electricity bill increase?

The increase in electricity bills of Delhiites will depend on their consumption. For example, if you are using zero to 200 units. Therefore, due to the Delhi government’s subsidy scheme, consumers consuming electricity up to 200 units will not have to pay any additional fee. This means that the electricity bill of such customers will be minimal or zero.

Customers who use 200 to 400 units of electricity. Therefore, the electricity rate for them can be Rs 6.11 (BRPL), Rs 6.18 (BYPL) or Rs 6.20 (TPDDL) per unit. This means that customers using 400 units may have to pay additional 75 to 100 rupees.

For consumers who consume 400 to 1200 units of electricity. Their electricity bill can increase from 200 to 300 rupees.

Consumers consuming more than 1200 units may have to pay up to Rs 11 per unit.

Consumers as well as several organizations have protested against the increase in electricity bills in Delhi. United Residents Delhi General Secretary Saurabh Gandhi described the increase in electricity bills arbitrarily and legally wrong. Apart from this, the Aam Aadmi Party says that it is putting additional burden on the people. However, the BJP government of Delhi claims that it will soon fulfill its promise to provide free electricity up to 300 units.
