Mumbai: The current electric vehicle policy in the state was implemented in 2022, which is scheduled to end on 31 March 2025. Therefore, the State Government’s Transport Department is taking steps to implement the new electric vehicle policy. Giving information in this regard, Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar said that the current policy is being reviewed and a new policy can be announced soon.

100 days review of Grand Alliance government begins

A 100 -day review of various departments has started after the Grand Alliance government came to power under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The report submitted by the Transport Department includes the electric vehicle policy and information about the process of preparing a new policy has been given.

The old target was set.

Since the state’s electric vehicle policy is ending by March 2025, the old policy is being reviewed to draft the new policy. The old target was that by 2025, 10% of the vehicles registered should be electric, and by 2030 this ratio should reach 30%. Statistics show that 9% of the vehicles registered in 2024 will be electric.

The report of the Transport Department Committee is important.

The Transport Department has constituted a committee to draft the new electric vehicle policy. This committee will study various issues and submit a report.

The following issues will be considered in the report:

  • What is the battery capacity of electric vehicles and how much distance can the vehicle travel after charging once?
  • Extension and plan of charging facilities in the state
  • Government grants and exemption for electric vehicles
  • Electric vehicles safety and efficiency
The High Court has expressed concern over the pollution problems caused by diesel vehicles and directed to emphasize the use of alternative fuel. Therefore, these suggestions will be included when preparing a new policy.

Extension of central government’s encouragement scheme

The central government’s electric vehicle incentive scheme was running from 2024 April 2024 to 31 July 2024, after which it was extended for two months. Now this scheme will continue until the incentive 3 scheme is finalized.

State Electric Vehicle Policy 2021’s major objectives

  • 10% of the vehicles registered by 2025 should be electric vehicles.
  • Six cities – Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad and Nashik should have at least 25% public transport electric electric.
  • 25% vehicles of fleet operators and aggregator companies should be electric
  • Making Maharashtra a top electric vehicle producer in the country
  • Establish at least one gigafactory in the state for advanced chemical cell battery production
  • Electric vehicle research and development plan

Grant received from state government

According to the policy of the state government, the grant will be provided in a limited form.

  • ₹ 10,000 subsidy for e-addict vehicles up to ₹ 1 lakh
  • A subsidy of ₹ 30,000 for an e-three-wheeler worth ₹ 15,000
  • ₹ 30,000 subsidy for 10,000 e-three-wheeler goods vehicles
  • Subsidy of ₹ 1.5 lakh for 10,000 e-four wheel vehicles
  • Subsidy of ₹ 1 lakh for 10,000 e-four wheel vehicles
  • Subsidy of ₹ 20 lakh for 1,000 e-Aadhaar

Registration of electric vehicles in the state

So far 6,41,548 electric vehicles have been registered, including two -wheelers, three -wheelers and buses.

It is clear that registration has declined in 2024 in 2023 compared to registration of 15,32,397.

New electric vehicle policy is probably likely to be announced soon

The Committee of the Transport Department will soon submit a report, which will be discussed and a final announcement of the new policy will be made. In view of increasing pollution, a more effective policy will be prepared keeping in mind the directions of the High Court. It is expected that a comprehensive policy to increase the use of electric vehicles in the state will be implemented soon.
