Madhya Pradesh: ED Attaches Properties Worth ₹4.68 Cr Of Former DIG Umesh Kumar Gandhi | Representational Image
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Enforcement Directorate has attached properties of the late DIG (Jails) Umesh Kumar Gandhi and his family worth over Rs 4.68 crore which were disproportionate to his known sources of income. Gandhi died of illness a few years ago.
The Special Police Establishment (SPE) carried out raids on the residential premises of Gandhi in 2012. ED began an inquiry into the case on the grounds of SPE action.
The raids carried out by ED and SPE sleuths revealed that Gandhi had acquired movable and unmovable properties disproportionate to his known sources of income. Apart from Bhopal, the family members of Gandhi have properties in Indore, Sagar, Katni and Sehore.
ED attached all the properties. SPE raids also revealed that Gandhi had acquired properties worth over Rs 25 crore, but in their challan, they mentioned properties worth over Rs 5.33 crore.
Gandhi, his brother Ajay Gandhi, and wife Archana Gandhi were sent to jail in 2016 in connection with the case. Gandhi died of cancer.
Another case of disproportionate money still underway
The case of ex-RTO constable Saurabh Sharma is still ongoing. The recent development on the case came in December 31 when Income Tax department officers have recorded the statement of former transport constable Saurabh Sharma’s mother.
The case was initiated in connection with Rs 11 crore cash and 52 kg gold brick were seized from an abandoned vehicle in Bhopal.
