Mumbai’s East Indians held the 14th edition of their community awards, honouring 42 people for their contribution to various fields.
The top award of the ‘East Indian of the Year 2024’ was given to Samir D’Monte, founder of SDM Architects, is a Mumbai-based architect celebrated for sustainable and community-centric projects. A CEPT Ahmedabad alumnus, D’monte has spearheaded the restoration of Bandra’s Ranwar village, the Carter Road Promenade redesign, and Bandra West station. The ‘East Indian Principal of the Year’ was presented to Father Magi Murzello, Rector of St Andrew’s College and Principal of St. Andrew’s School, who is known for introducing innovative ideas to transform education.
The ‘East Indian Heritage Church of the Year’ was given to Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in Papdy, Vasai, built in 1565, for its beautiful restoration. Chrison Shannon Kinny, an assistant teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Kalina, an award-winner teachers, received the ‘East Indian Educationist of the Year’. Conroy Remedios, a Superintendent at Mumbai Customs and a Dronacharya Award winner was given the ‘East Indian Sportsperson of the Year’. Remedios is a distinguished hockey player and coach, and trains young players free of cost at St. Andrew’s, Don Bosco Academy, and Republican Sports Club.
Other awards were presented for contribution to religion, entrepreneurship, and social service. The awards were given at a ceremony on Friday at Aksa. Jesus Band from Uttan performed live at the event and guests enjoyed a special East Indian dinner.
