Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Traffic cops have resolved to streamline movement of e-rickshaws in New Year to relieve the commuters of traffic jams especially in old city areas.

The increasing number of e-rickshaws in the city is causing frequent traffic jams at many places especially on narrow routes of the old city. While the records of traffic police says that total number of registered e-rickshaws moving the in the city is around 8000, the number may be much higher than the traffic police records. Traffic officials said approval of traffic committee is awaited for defining colour code, routes and parking of e-rickshaws.

A letter has already been forwarded to the committee in this regard. Once the formalities are complete, e-rickshaws in different areas will be given a separate colour.

The movement of e-rickshaws with different colour codes will be restricted to their designated routes and their drivers will be penalised if they will violate the rules. The colour codes and routes will be allotted as per residential address of e-rickshaw drivers, traffic officials added.

Additional DCP traffic (north zone) Basant Kumar Kaul said total number of registered e-rickshaws in the city is 8,000. After a meeting and approval of traffic committee, they will be allotted colour codes and their routes will be defined. Moreover, a designated parking for e-rickshaws will also be in place to ensure smooth traffic movement, he added. Traffic officials said challans of 450 e-rickshaws were made each month. Majority of challans are made if the e-rickshaws are found driven by minors.
