Navi Mumbai: A New year party went wrong leading to a double murder after the deceased who was gay tried to extend advances to two of his straight friends. To hide the murder, the accused friends left the gas burners on hoping for a gas explosion in the flat that could hide the cause of death of the mother-son duo.

Geeta Jaggi (70) and her son Jitendra Jaggi (45), residents of Dream society at sector 6 in Kamothe were killed by the son’s friends identified as Shubham Mahendra Narayani (19) and Sanjyot Mangesh Dodke (19).

The incident came to light when Kamothe police was informed about a gas leakage at flat number 104 of Dream society at sector 6 in Kamothe. The police reached the flat by around 4.30 pm along with fire brigade and broke opened the flat. The three burners of the gas stove was found on and the windows too were shut. The flat was filled with the smell of gas which the fire brigade immediately brought under control.

Later, the police found two bodies in two respective bedrooms of the flat. Initially, it was not clear if it was a case of murder or suicide which had to be verified with post mortem. Kamothe police and Navi Mumbai Crime Branch jointly started the investigations after it was found that the son had head injury and the mother had strangulation marks on the body.

“We studied the cctv footage of the building and its surrounding and identified our suspects who were seen entering and coming out of the society multiple times throughout the wee hours of Wednesday,” Deputy commissioner of police (Zone II) Prashant Mohite, said. As per the cctv footage, the trio are seen entering the building at 11.57 pm on December 31 and the two accused are seen leaving the society at 7.12 am on Wednesday.

Narayani and Dodke were identified to be the residents of Kamothe itself and they were traced to Ulwe wherein they had gone to dispose the clothes they wore at the time of murder. Following the arrest, the police learnt that the murder happened while they were partying on the new year night and the deceased man who was a gay, sought sexual advances from both the accused.

Dodke was a Sy Bcom student who also worked part time as a delivery boy. Meanwhile, Narayani was a delivery boy with a food app. Around two years back, while Narayani was walking along with his dog, the deceased man befriended him taking a liking towards the dog.

In the process, he also became friends with Dodke who was already known to Narayani. “Once in a while the trio used to meet up to party. On the new year, the deceased man had invited the two boys for celebrating the New Year at his home,” assistant commissioner of police (crime branch) Ajay Landge said.

During the party, after getting high, the deceased man started making advances towards both of them which irked them. According to police, the deceased became aggressive following which the duo took a wooden extension board which was lying nearby and used it to hit him on his head multiple times.

“Hearing the cries, the mother entered the room after which Narayani dragged the mother to another bedroom and strangulated her with hands,” assistant commissioner of police (Panvel division) Ashok Rajput said.

Before fleeing from the flat, the duo turned on the burners of the gas stove. “The idea was to make it look like an accident. They assumed that a gas leak could trigger a fire in the house in which would hide their crime,” said DCP Mohite said.
