Mumbai: Almost eight days after the tragic death of a 25-year-old model in a road accident in Bandra (West), police have arrested a dumper driver for allegedly causing death by negligence.

The accused was arrested from his native place in Bhagan Vigaha village, Bihar, on December 11 under a transit remand and was brought to Mumbai on Thursday. He will be produced in the Bandra court on Friday. The accused, a resident of Khar Danda, is a driver with no prior criminal record.

The deceased, Shivani Singh, 25, was a model residing in Malad (West) and working in the film industry. Following the accident on December 5, the dumper driver fled the scene and switched off his mobile phone to evade arrest.

A police officer stated, “The dumper driver kept his mobile phone switched off for many days after the incident. However, we knew he would eventually turn it on. Using technical assistance, we successfully traced and arrested him. He ran away to his native place.”

Shivani was a rear-seat passenger on a motorcycle driven by her male friend when the incident occurred. At around 8pm, the duo was travelling on Ambedkar Road near Kalantri Square in Bandra (West) when a dumper collided head-on with the motorcycle.

The collision caused both riders to fall, with Shivani coming under the wheels of the dumper. She sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Bhabha Hospital by bystanders, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. Her friend survived with a fractured leg.

Witnesses reported that Shivani’s friend may not have signalled while making a turn, potentially contributing to the accident. However, the dumper driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.

According to the police, the Shivani’s friend was wearing a helmet, and neither of them was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The dumper involved in the collision has been seized.

An FIR was registered against the dumper driver on December 5 under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
