Mumbai: Despite the increase in digital payment methods in the country, the trend of keeping cash in hand is still going on. According to the information received, in the finished financial year 2025, bank account holders in the country withdrew an average of Rs 1.30 crore per ATM.
The information received shows that the maximum amount was extracted from ATMs in the states of North India. In the last financial year, Bihar, New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have withdrawn the maximum amount from ATMs in these three states.
The increase in withdrawal from ATM means that people in the country still have a deep attraction towards cash. A large number of people still prefer to pay cash for retail, small business transactions and everyday purchases.
The annual average withdrawal per ATM in FY 2017 was Rs 1.02 crore, which has now increased to Rs 1.30 crore. In the last financial year, Bihar recorded the highest number of annual growth in ATM withdrawal. New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh stood second with 4 percent, while Himachal Pradesh saw 3 percent increase and 2 percent in Chhattisgarh.
According to recent data from the Reserve Bank of India, the number of ATMs has increased by 32 percent in ten years from 2014 to 2024 and the currency has increased by 157 percent.
Meanwhile, 18,500 crore transactions were done through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the last financial year, which was 41 percent more year-on-year basis. In terms of value, a total payment of Rs 260 lakh crore was processed through the UPI platform, which is 30% higher than the financial year 2023-24.
However, cash is becoming integrated part of the country’s economy and ATMs remain an important source of cash.
