The Decision Review System (DRS) has come into the scanner once again after a contentious lbw call of Mitchell Marsh went against Team India on day two of the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. In a video going viral on social media, Virat Kohli argued with on-field umpire Richard Illingworth that KL Rahul’s dismissal in the Perth Test had the same combination.
The incident occurred in the second-last over before the two sides headed for the dinner break. With Marsh heading down the wicket to defend against Ashwin, the bat was closer to the pad. Nevertheless, the veteran off-spinner had convinced Rohit Sharma to take the review and the captain went for it too. Even as the replays indicated that the bat and pad were closer to one another, third umpire Richard Kettleborough settled on being bat first.
In the video surfaced on social media, Kohli told the umpires, “KL’s was the same in Perth:
KL Rahul became victim to a contentious DRS call in the first innings in Perth as it was inconclusive via snicko whether the ball hit the bat or the bat hit the pad. However, the third umpire had ruled it out.
Mitchell Marsh eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin:
The West Australian was eventually dismissed by Ashwin, but the seam-bowling all-rounder curiously did not review the caught behind decision despite not nicking it to the keeper. It was also Ashwin’s first wicket of the innings.
Jasprit Bumrah, who had nipped out Usman Khawaja on day one, removed Nathan McSweeney and Steve Smith on day two to apply pressure on Australia. The opening day of the pink-ball Test saw Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opting to bat first but Mitchell Starc proved to be the star of the show with six wickets to skittle the tourists for 180.
Later, McSweeney and Labuschagne dug in hard to get through to Stumps with the hosts at 86-1. Team India lead the five-Test series by 1-0 after thumping Australia by 295 runs in Perth.
