Peshawar, 30 March – Drone attacks were carried out targeting terrorists’ bases during a major military campaign on Saturday in Pakistan’s disturbed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. While 12 terrorists were killed in this action, some of the common citizens also lost their lives, including women and children.
The campaign was carried out in the inaccessible hills of Katlang region of Mardan district, which was considered a safe haven of terrorists. In a press release issued by the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it was reported that the action was taken on the basis of strong intelligence, in which many active terrorists were reported to be hidden.
The official statement said, “This operation is part of the ongoing war against terrorism and many of the terrorists have been destroyed in it.”
However, it was also accepted in this press release that the presence of common citizens was later reported in the area which was targeted. The report revealed after the attack confirmed that some citizens, including women and children present in the surrounding area, were also hit by the attack.
Reacting to this tragic incident, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said, “The fight against terrorism is necessary, but it is extremely sad and condemnable to kill common citizens.” He assured that immediate medical assistance is being given to the injured and all possible help and compensation will be provided to the victim families.
The government also clarified that a detailed and fair investigation of the entire matter will be conducted so that such incidents can be avoided in future.
The Chief Minister’s Information Advisor Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif also expressed deep grief over the death of innocent citizens and said that the government is taking this tragedy seriously. They said, “Our aim is only to eliminate terrorists, no innocent should be killed.”
The incident has once again exposed the severity of the security challenges ongoing in the northern areas of Pakistan, where it has become the biggest challenge to maintain a balance between military action and the safety of ordinary citizens.
