America’s newly elected President Donald Trump is in the news for his statements before assuming office. Recently he has talked about including Greenland, Canada and Panama Canal in America, which has sparked a new debate. Controversy has arisen on this issue, but it may prove beneficial for Russia. According to a report in Times of India, these statements of Trump are being seen as a gift to Vladimir Putin.
Solovyov, host of the Russian television show “The Evening with Vladimir Solovyov,” said Trump’s plans coincide with Russia’s regional ambitions. He said, “If Trump is talking about annexing Greenland, Panama and Canada to the US, then why can’t Russia take back Finland, the Baltic and Alaska?” Russian experts have supported Trump’s statements, arguing that it reinforces his approach to regional expansion.
Russian TV channels welcomed Trump’s comments, suggesting that the statements could help legitimize Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. Trump has previously praised Putin’s invasion of Crimea, calling it a “brilliant and wise move.”
“Trump is not joking,” Dmitry Kiselev, host of Russia’s The Weekly News, said on a show. “He is serious about expanding America’s regional ambitions, hinting at normalizing land grabs around the world.” It has also been noted that Trump never expressed moral opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but only raised questions about the cost and duration of the war.
