Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore’s Maharaja Yashwantrao (MY) Hospital achieved a major achievement by performing a brain tumor surgery on a patient without fully sedating him. This is the first time the hospital conducted such a surgery.

According to the Head of Neurosurgery Department at MY Hospital, Dr. Rakesh Gupta, a 40-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital after he complained about headache and faced epileptic seizures. In the MRI report, a brain tumor was discovered in a delicate part of his brain.

Awake Craniotomy method used

Later, the patient was operated by an ‘Awake Craniotomy’ method, i.e., operation without making the patient completely unconscious. This technique reduces the possibilities of damage to the sensitive parts of the brain.

This method enables the patient to remain fully conscious immediately after the operation and also to interact with family members. Additionally, the patient requires a shorter stay in the ICU and hospital.

Patient conversed with doctors during surgery

It is said that the patient remained awake during the operation and even conversed with the doctors. Observing the speedy recovery, the patient was discharged from the hospital after five days.

Anesthesia team played crucial role

The cooperation of the anesthesia team played a crucial role in the success of the operation.  Key contributions also came from neurosurgeons Dr. Zafar Sheikh, Dr. Yash Madnani, and Dr. Prateek.

Dr. Gupta emphasized that the Neurosurgery Department at MY Hospital is equipped to handle complex surgeries with skilled surgeons, MCh resident doctors, and physiotherapists ensuring high-quality care.
